Walks in Aso-Kuju National Park

Seeing the crater of an active volcano is what might come to mind when you think about visiting Aso. But Aso offers a lot more than that. It has a world-class caldera with people living inside it, grassland maintained for thousands of years, alongside a wealth of spring water and onsen. To feel close to the majestic landscape and experience the local life and culture, why don't you take time and explore Aso area on foot?

Here is one of the major treks in Aso ~Taka-dake and Naka-dake ~

Access to Taka-dake and Naka-dake was closed since the earthquake in 2016 alongside landslides and volcanic eruptions. It is now reopen to the public as shown below.

Red route: No entry

Yellow route: Very steep and rocky (for the experienced) Road from/to Sensuikyo stays closed.

Blue route: Open but beware volcanic gas.

***The mountain is an active volcano and continues to release volcanic gas. Please learn about the risk involved and how to avoid a volcanic gas accident before setting off for a walk.
