Seeing the crater of an active volcano is what might come to mind when you think about visiting Aso. But Aso offers a lot more than that. It has a world-class caldera with people living inside it, grassland maintained for thousands of years, alongside a wealth of spring water and onsen. To feel close to the majestic landscape and experience the local life and culture, why don't you take time and explore Aso area on foot?

Access to Taka-dake and Naka-dake was closed since the earthquake in 2016 alongside landslides and volcanic eruptions. It is now reopen to the public as shown below.

Red route: No entry

Yellow route: Very steep and rocky (for the experienced) Road from/to Sensuikyo stays closed.

Blue route: Open but beware volcanic gas.

　6月25日の日記に引き続き、特定外来生物「オオキンケイギク」の駆除についてですが、今回は啓発活動についてご紹介します。

5～6月頃に、鮮やかな黄色の花を咲かせます。

阿蘇市に協力していただき、

・広報誌6月号と共に、環境省が作成した駆除チラシを市内全戸に配布

・IP告知放送機器「お知らせ端末（光ネットワークにより行政や地区からの情報を住民の皆さまへ発信する）」を利用して、駆除の呼びかけを行いました。

その後、住民の方から、「この花はオオキンケイギク？」と問合せが入りました。住宅地の幹線道から少し入った所の生育状況など、地元の方しか分からない情報もいただいたので、とてもありがたいことです。

JR九州にもご協力いただき、今は不通となっている豊肥線駅周辺でも実施しました。

きれいに刈り残してある所も多い

毎年抜き取っている所は、株の大きさが小さくなってきて株数も減っており、平成29年度は生重量80kgと成果を実感していたのですが、新しい生育地が見つかったことで、今回の駆除量は生重量で300kg。大幅アップとなりました。

「除草剤を撒いてはどうか？」と言う声もありますが、撒かなくなると、再びごっそり生えてきています。根っこから抜き取って、株の大きさを小さくしていく方が良さそうです。

駆除の方法ですが、抜き取ったままの状態での移動はできません。2～3日天日に干して枯らしてから、各自治体のゴミ処理方法に従って、処理してください。

• ■なぜ駆除しないといけないのでしょうか？■

見比べてください。オオキンケイギクを抜いたあとは、他の植物がほとんど見られません。

オオキンケイギクが生えているところに、在来植物が生育しにくくなっています。

阿蘇地域の希少な植物が生育する豊かな生態系が崩れてしまうことがないよう、できる限り対策していきたいのです。

「阿蘇周辺の地域にも見られる。どうにかできないの？」との声も聞かれます。活動を継続してきたことにより、住民の方々の意識が高まってきたように感じました。

車などにくっついて種が持ち込まれないように、周辺地域の方々にもご協力いただけるよう、伝えていきたいと思います。
